Get To Know: Lauran Hibberd

1. For those who don’t know about you and your music, tell us a little bit about who you are and where you’re from…

So my name is Lauran (with an ‘A’ not an ‘E’), my dad spelt it wrong on the birth certificate. I’m from the Isle of Wight and I still live here which I believe makes me a ‘Caulkhead’ (google it). I make funny rock music, which involves a lot of irony and self deprecation as well as a lot of overdrive pedals.

2.Who/what inspired you to start a career in music?

There were definitely a mixture of factors, I think myself and mostly my mum was really trying to find something I liked and something I could be good at when I was an early teen. After trying and failing at numerous ballet style activities we settled on guitar lessons. As soon as I learnt how to play 'Price Tag' by Jessie J I was sold ha! From then on I started writing my own songs, and discovering artists beyond 'Capital FM' on my way to school etc. I fell down the rabbit hole of trying to learn everything there was to know about my favourite bands and the obsession only kept growing.

3. Who are your biggest musical influences?

Weezer are definitely one of my biggest influences, as soon as I was handed the blue album and it got stuck in the CD port of my first car there was really no going back. After growing up on Avril Lavigne, it felt like the next right step to fall into 90’s/2000’s alt rock. My first ever gig at my local social club involved covers of Weezer, Pixies, Smashing Pumpkins and Wheatus. I feel like that sums it up pretty well.

4. Tell us about the writing and recording process of your new release…

Recording my debut album has been stupidly fun, I never really felt totally at ease recording until now. Having so much time to write and record my own demos in the pandemic really cemented my sound to myself, I definitely gained a new confidence that poured over into the writing and recording process which is why I’ve never felt more excited for anything in my life. Working with Larry Hibbitt (name twins) on this record has been insane, the way that man can make guitars sound blows my mind. He really ‘got’ my project from the off, and I’ve learned a lot from him. Every boat has been pushed out and every corner of my mind has been used to make this record, and I can’t wait for people to hear it.

5. What has been your biggest career highlight so far?

Definitely playing the Apollo in London last year, it was a bucket list venue of mine for a long time. This is an odd one to say, but my van got broken into the day of this gig and all of mine and my band's equipment was stolen - it was expectedly horrific. We still played the Apollo that night, with nothing of our own and the sparsest live set up I’ve ever seen but it’s the proudest I have ever felt and one of my most memorable gigs. We played a killer show against all odds, and completed the tour.

6. Who would you be your dream collaboration and why?

I would love to write a torturously sad song with Phoebe Bridgers. Ever since ‘Stranger in the Alps’ came out I’ve been obsessed, and it’s definitely bought out another side of me musically. There’s a few songs on my new record that definitely come from endless hours of Phoebe listening. She is also just outrageously cool and I basically just want to be her mate.

7. Have you met anyone and been totally starstruck?

I had a FaceTime with Pete Wentz once, I’m not sure how many words I actually got out. We were chatting about music and my manager was also on the call, he kept texting me saying ‘maybe you could actually say something.’ It took me by surprise, I think my inner teenage self could not process it all.

8. If you could only listen to one song on repeat for the rest of time what would it be and why?

Elliott Smith - St Ides Heaven. It has the ability to oddly make me the happiest and saddest version of myself, I feel like that’s a good balance if I only have one song available to me for life. It would definitely see me through.

9.What’s on your playlists that people wouldn’t expect?

Lizzo, Lizzo and more Lizzo. I LOVE her. She gives me confidence I never knew I needed, and I think she’s an amazing role model for any young person. Also the music is just damn good, and she is crazy talented. Touring with Lizzo would be beyond a dream.

10. What can we expect from your live shows?

A lot of high kicks, a lot of dry jokes and some questionable outfit choices. If that doesn’t sell it, I also do some beyond average guitar playing, my songs are funny and I like to heckle people in the front row. Basically, it’s a lot of fun. It’s also very loud. Bring ear plugs.

11. When can we see you live this year?

I’m playing a tonne of festivals including The Great Escape, Truck and Y Not. As well support tours (which I can’t announce yet). I’ll also be doing a big headline run to support my debut record coming out this year. I’ll be around, probably in a town year you.
