Get To Know: Luude

1. For those who don’t know about you and your music, tell us a little bit about who you are and where you’re from…

I’m Christian Benson, I produce as LUUDE (and have another project called Choomba) I’m from Australia - born in Tasmania but I’ve lived all over the place down here. Outside the music thing - I’ve got a couple of dogs, don’t mind a few schoeys at the pub, getting the mullet trimmed up from time to time.

2. Who/what inspired you to start a career in music?

Pretty randomly saw this Avicii production tutorial on YouTube one day - before then I played basketball my whole life and that was the thing I wanted to do, but I saw that tutorial and thought I could give it a crack - downloaded FL Studio and was instantly hooked on it and haven’t looked back.

3. Who are your biggest musical influences?

I’d say I get inspiration from everywhere, obviously being Aussie Pendulum are a big early influence on the DnB tip - but I like everything from Bicep, Fatimah Yamaha and The Blaze through to bands like Tame Impala and Grouplove. I feel like you can get ideas from anything and try make it work in your production.

4. Tell us about the writing and recording process of your new release…

It’s a pretty funny one really - I was just so bored without touring during COVID so thought I’d start making remixes and trying to chuck em up on TikTok as something fun - being from Aus I started out just doing Aussie club classics one of the first I did was of 'Mad Dog'which you’d only get if you’re down here and follow Brown Cardigan. It was pretty obvious that 'Down Under' was such an iconic Aussie tune - so I gave it a quick remix and it actually sounded pretty sick, people instantly loved it and then it just took on a life of its own going totally viral and then eventually getting released.

5. What has been your biggest career highlight so far?

Everything happening at the moment around this tune has been surreal, just not something you’d ever expect so I’d have to say all those things combined - crazy to see it going Gold and Platinum in different parts of the world.

6. Who would you be your dream collaboration and why?

I’d love to work with Labrinth - all his music is ridiculously good.

7. Have you met anyone and been totally starstruck?

Probably Skrillex haha!

8.If you could only listen to one song on repeat for the rest of time what would it be and why?

Tame Impala - 'The Less I Know The Better', I reckon I listen to it almost every day and have done for years.

9. What’s on your playlists that people wouldn’t expect?

James Blunt and heaps of old Western movie soundtracks.

10. What can we expect from your live shows?

I try to keep it pretty high energy for the full set, if people are gonna pay money to come see me I want it to be a great time. We’re working on an upgraded lighting and production show - but that will only be for Australia for the next run before we bring it out to Europe next year.

11. When can we see you live this year?

I’m touring heaps through Europe for the festival season in the summer - which I’m that keen on, don’t know how much I can announce about the shows - but there’s a heap coming up.

'Listen to Luude's smash hit 'Down Under' now!'
