Get To Know: Remi Wolf
Californian breakout star Remi Wolf is making pop music her way and we LOVE it. Distinctively unapologetic in her sound, look, and visuals, Remi’s latest EP 'We Love Dogs!', a remix EP of her 2019 debut 'You’re A Dog!', has seen her work with the likes of Dominic Fike, Nile Rodgers and Hot Chip.
Reluctant to put herself into one genre (she’s previously told 'I.D.' that “everything is soup”), Remi’s world seems to be colourful and kaleidoscopic (you only have to take a look at her Instagram to see how fun she is!) and that definitely transfers into her music. With hints of funk, soul, R&B, and pop, combined with her witty but relatable lyricism, Remi’s whole vibe has creativity in abundance. It’s really brilliant to see an artist who is so confident in who they are. It was after a performance in her freshman year with her bandmate Chloe that cemented Remi’s passion to pursue music. Before this, Remi was actually a junior Olympic skier until the age of 16, but has said she’s always loved performing and music.
If there is one word we would use to sum up Remi (if you even can!), it would be fun. So, we strongly encourage you to turn her music up loud and dance around your room. After all, Remi did tell 'V Magazine' for people listening to her music “to just feel like they can let loose, be themselves, and be free.”
1. For those who don’t know about you and your music, tell us a little bit about who you are and where you’re from…
My name is Remi Wolf and I am originally from Palo Alto, CA, but I have lived in L.A. for the past seven years. I am a boss bitch singer/songwriter/producer and I also like cooking and I have a dog!
2. Who/what inspired you to start a career in music?
I have been performing ever since I was a young kid and it provided me with confidence as a kid.
3. Who are your biggest musical influences?
Chaka Khan, Amy Winehouse, Nile Rodgers, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Erykah Badu, Beck, Hall and Oates, Kimbra, John Mayer, and Jared Solomon.
4. Tell us about the writing and recording process of your new release…
My 'We Love Dogs!'remix package is really special to me because some of my biggest influences got to touch songs I have released over the past few years. Nile Rodgers was very awesome to work with because he was really collaborative and interested in making the remix the most fire it could be. We talked everyday on the phone for two weeks about the remix, but also about life and his past in the music industry. I have made so many new friends in the process and will definitely be working with a lot of these artists soon!
5. What has been your biggest career highlight so far?
Playing the Fillmore in SF was a huge milestone for me. I went to see so many concerts there as a kid, so it was a huge full circle moment. My favorite part of my job is performing for a live audience so every tour I’ve done so far was the most fun I have ever had in my life. It’s such a beautiful thing to be able to connect with an audience through my music. I’ve made lifelong friends with Still Woozy and Cautious Clay...it’s such a rewarding, community-building experience.
6. Who would you be your dream collaboration and why?
The Queen Erykah Badu because she is stunning and we don’t deserve her.
7. Have you met anyone and been totally starstruck?
One time when I was in college, Joe Jonas spoke at a forum class we had every Friday and I was like woah holy s**t that is Joe Jonas, my childhood crush.
8. If you could only listen to one song on repeat for the rest of time what would it be and why?
I think any song would drive me insane, but I guess I’d go with 'Arrow Through Me'by Wings. Lit song.
9. What’s on your playlists that people wouldn’t expect?
I have no clue what anyone expects from me at all. But maybe people would be shocked that I listen to the 'Tarzan' soundtrack all the time lol. I love Phil Collins. I also have this album by Steve Reich called 'Steve Reich: Music for 18 Musicians' on my playlist that is meditative and beautiful.
10. What can we expect from your live shows?
Expect the unexpected???? BUT definitely expect me to sing and dance my ass off hehe.
11.Have you got any fun livestreams/online events planned for this year? / When can we see you live?
There are a couple live stream things I have coming up, but I will definitely be touring later this year so keep yer eyes peeled, lads!
