Get To Know: Sad Night Dynamite

This week we're getting to know the next big and upcoming duo: Sad Night Dynamite

This week, Sad Night Dynamite gave us an insight into their friendship and the music they create.

Made up of Josh Greacen and Archie Blagden, the Glastobury-raised duo met at school and have been making their unique mix up of Britpop, Punk, Hip-Hop & Lo-fi rap ever since. They have previously stated that they want to take their listeners on a journey and ‘out of real life’ with their music.

Their self-titled debut mixtape dropped earlier this year and led to artists such as FKA Twigs and Pa Salieu hitting them up to collaborate.

This month, they finally get to tour with that mixtape across the UK before going over to the States to support Glass Animals. We can’t wait to see what’s next for the quirky duo!

1. For those who don’t know about you and your music, tell us a little bit about who you are and where you’re from…

[Archie] Josh and I grew up in the countryside and have known each other for a while. At school once I remember being in a lesson trying to focus on getting at least one GCSE but all I could hear was Josh upstairs in the music rooms tinkling away on a piano. I decided then I wanted to be a popstar so I left the class and we wrote our first song together.

2. Who/what inspired you to start a career in music?

[Archie] It’s fair to say that growing I enjoyed nothing more than eating. At about 10 years old the biscuits caught up with me and it started to show. I didn’t wanna just be the fat kid so I learnt the guitar. I was better at the guitar back then than I am now. So getting into music was a shallow choice for me. For Josh it was more natural. He was born whistling a big chorus.

3. Who are your biggest musical influences?

[Archie] We take influence from bands, artists and producers which have their own unique style to them. Bands like The Clash to producers like Boys Noize and Dre. We enjoy experimenting with these influences by putting them all together in our music. When you put it all together you don’t know if you’ve made something good or s**t. I’d rather it that way. Being unsure about what you’ve created is a feeling we really enjoy.

4. Tell us about the writing and recording process of your new release…

[Archie] Whilst writing the first mixtape Josh and I had more time apart so we’d have to find a way of piecing our ideas together to make a song that we thought worked. I think in doing that your often gonna end up with more unique track. Mixtape two was us in very different circumstances. Some of our favourite tracks are on there so it proves there’s no correct way to write. However, for the album and music yet to come, a balancing act seems like the sweet spot for our writing process.

5. What has been your biggest career highlight so far?

[Josh] It has to be playing to a couple hundred people at All Points East. It was the first time we’d ever met our fans and it felt like meeting all your long-lost relatives at once.

6. Who would you be your dream collaboration and why?

[Josh] I think we’d have different personal choices. But one we’d agree on is Yung Lean. He’s a big inspiration for us and an example of a true artist.

7. Have you met anyone and been totally starstruck?

[Josh] When I first met Archie I was starstruck.

8. If you could only listen to one song on repeat for the rest of time what would it be and why?

[Josh] For me it would have to be ‘Breathe’ by Pink Floyd. It never gets old for me. Everything about it is perfect and I could listen to it until my ears bleed.
[Archie] Probably ‘Believe’ by Cher.

9.What’s on your playlists that people wouldn’t expect?

[Josh] There’s a lot of Romanian gypsy music. Hours and hours of it.

10.What can we expect from your live shows?

[Josh] On stage Archie and I are going to be very violent towards each other and only one of us will come out on top. It’s going to be MMA meets musical theatre. So if that’s not a reason to not buy a ticket I don’t know what is.

11. Have you got any fun livestreams/online events planned for this year? / When can we see you live?

[Josh] We’ve got a pretty busy year planned, lots of touring, including upcoming UK shows later this month [November] and also going around America with Glass Animals. It’s gonna be a lot of fun!
