Introducing Jack Garratt, Get To Know The Man Behind The Music

Music's in his blood...

The name Jack Garratt might be quite familiar with you now - BRITs Critics' Choice winner, nominee for Brand New For 2016 and now, he’s our very own MTV PUSH artist for the month of February.

Although his name and songs such as ‘Worry’ and ‘Breathe Life’ may be familiar to you, we want you to get to know a bit more about the man himself.

In the second of our exclusive interview pieces, we're introducing the man behind the music.

“My name is Jack Garratt, I am 24 years old and I’m from Little Chalfont in Buckinghamshire.”

With music runningin Jack’s family, it was almost as if he had no choice but to choose it as a path to follow, he explains: “The music in my family has always been there, it’s been quite an obvious trait that seems to have trickled down the bloodline."

He continues: "My grandfather was a church organist and would sing in choirs and was a musical genius to a certain extent.I think I’m the only one that I’m aware of that’s been stupid enough to try and use it as a career option.”

Reminiscing about his time at school, Jack had friends but would prefer to spend time alone with his music, he says: “I remember the first time I realised music wasn’t something that everyone adored and trusted in the same way that I did as a kid.”

“I would go to school and try to talk to my mates about music and playing instruments and stuff and they would turn around and go: “What’re you talking about? Shut up.” And I realised that I was the weird one.”

He adds: “The best way to put it is, as a kid I was fat… I would choose, at school, to sit inside in a room without any windows in one of the practice rooms and play piano. I would choose to do that for 45 minutes rather than go outside and spend time with my friends.”

“I remember from aged six to nine I was loud and abrasive and loved making noise and loved playing instruments and doing all those things. When I was about ten I realised I could get attention by doing that, so when I was eleven I started writing songs.”

We're pushing Jack Garratt all month long. Keep checking mtv.co.uk/push each week for brand new exclusive pieces with Jack and help us spread the love with #PUSHJackGarratt.
