"Why Sound Like Everything Else When You Can So Easily Sound Like Yourself?" Jack Garratt Talks Genre-Hopping & Writing In The Moment

"And also, why sound like yourself when you can sound different every time?"

We’ve already learnt a little bit about Jack Garratt from the first part of our exclusive MTV Push interview. Now, in part two, we’re going to go a little bit deeper into the music and his creative processes.

“The only intention I’ve ever had creatively, as a musician, is to be as different from myself as possible,” Jack begins, outlining part of what being a musician means to him.

He continues, explaining he’s all about writing for the here and now: “I don’t want to write the song that I wrote yesterday and I don’t want to write to song I’m going to write tomorrow, I only write the music I’m writing now.”

In most reviews you’ll read of Jack’s live or recorded sound, people try to explain his experimentalism with genres. Here he reveals what all this actually means to him, saying: “Genre hopping is something I intend to do, and I intend to do it forever and ever because I think genres are boring.”

He adds: “Why sound like everything else when you can so easily sound like yourself? And then also, why sound like yourself when you can so easily sound different every time?”

“I like that people find it difficult to put me in a box, not because I’m so totally unique and different and awesome and cool, because I don’t think I’m any of those things, but instead, if I can encourage one person to challenge themselves creatively and challenge other people creatively, and all the while still have fun with it, then I’ve done everything I need to do. I’ve done a good thing.”

One part of his music that really connects with listeners is his lyrics, however, as Jack explains, they don’t come easily to him: “Lyrics are really really hard I think, or at least they’re really hard for me. Some people can channel lyrics faster. I find them very hard to find, so because of it they take me a long time and I really think about them.”

“There is a theme that runs through the album, to me there’s a lot of obsessive qualities about the record, about the lyrics within it. It’s a dark level of obsession, a very selfish level of obsession that appears in every song.”

His debut album 'Phase' hits shelves on Friday 19th February and luckily for us, Jack took the time to explain a little bit about the title of the album, he said: “The idea of a phase gives the impression that it will end at some point but there is also a more subtle definition of it in certain other aspects of nature and autonomy where phases usually mean that it ends where it begins.”

“I really really like that as an idea, especially for an album to exist as a body of work but also for it to exist as a life form, something that kind of lives and breathes, goes through changes and means certain things to certain people and ultimately at some point, dies. I like the think that the album will then live again for other people and go through different phases for other people.”

As expected, Jack’s mind is already on the next thing, he explains: “Personally, calling it Phase indicates that I’m onto the next one, it is a part of my life and is a collection of songs I’m very proud of but that my head and my body and my person is already on to tackling whatever the next phase is.”
