MTV2 Night at Spanking New
Bristol goes mad for The Wombats, Hadouken, The Twang and Biffy Clyro
Its Friday 23rd of March and MTV2 sets up at the Anson Rooms in Bristol for the third Spanking New Music night in the city. Broadcasting live on Overdrive and on MTV on April 27th, expectations are high for this night as it was the quickest to sell out.
After a long day of interviews and promotion, the first band on stage introduced by MTV2s own Zane Lowe are The Wombats, as yet unsigned but tipped to be one of the big success stories of the next few years. Opening with an acapella number and complete with cuddly marsupials on stage, the Scouse trio win over lots of hearts and have the crowd dancing after just a few numbers.
No surprises that the upbeat mood continues when Hadouken take the stage, all hoods and nu-rave silliness. This is what the crowd was waiting for and the evening moves up a notch. Describing themselves as two lovers and two brothers, the band are in fine form and get tighter and better each time you see them. They dont disappoint and its not going to be long before they get snapped up by one of the many record labels hanging around.
Third up on an amazing bill are The Twang, destined for great things as they fill a big gap in the market " great singalong tunes for beered-up boys and dolly birds. The true heirs to Britpop and all that came after it " the band hold the crowd in the palm of their hand and rightly leave everyone begging for more.
The night belongs to the final band of three days of great music. Biffy Clyro have grown in front of us all from slightly out-there art-rockers to a much bigger sound thats set to be the soundtrack to a big summer of festivals. Like many three-pieces, they work harder than bigger bands and make a sound more suited to an arena than the confines of Bristols Anson Room. Its going to be the summer of Biffy, and this performance proves them more than capable of taking on the big boys.
Top marks to all the bands for an amazing night out, to everyone in Bristol for showing that the West Country knows how to party and to MTV2 for picking the right bands for a huge three days of music. Dont miss exclusive tracks online at mtv.co.uk/spankingnew in the coming weeks and on MTV on April 27th.
