Hurts Talk To MTV Student Of The Year!
We catch up with Theo and Adam for their tips on getting that big break...
Now they might be Manchester’s most sharply dressed synth-pop duo, but Hurts were once scruffy students from Salford.
“[University] was the best years of my life. I had long hair,” lead singer Theo Hutchcraft revealed to MTV’s Student of the Year. “Coming from a small town it was everything we could’ve dreamed of. It’s where we met and where we started to make music.”
Whilst studying and sharpening the musical skills that would see their ascent into pop stardom, both members still couldn’t avoid the inevitable collection of crap jobs that maintained their manicured quiffs stayed above the dangerously deep waters of student debt.
“I was a milkman,’ revealed instrumentalist Adam Anderson. ‘Which made me eternally resent early mornings. I still hate them now. And I was an ice cream man. In fact I learnt to play guitar whilst sat in the ice cream van.”
Meanwhile, Theo kept the pain of his overdraft at bay by “working in a popular supermarket. I had to wear an orange fleece.” Painful attire for such a sartorially conscious pop star.
“I also had a job cutting the grass in a graveyard. It sounds very romantic, very Addams Family, but I had to cut three graveyards over a weekend. It took me nine hours to cut one. I knew where all the dead people were. I did it for three years,” Theo further explained.
And on getting their big break? The pair appreciated that lady luck played a large part in their success, but were in unanimous agreement that they would not have the glittering pop careers they have now if it wasn’t for some good old-fashioned perspiration.
“We just learnt to work hard and practice. We taught ourselves to be the best we could be.” Theo’s studious sentiments were backed up by band mate Adam, “It’s a combination of working really hard and being properly dedicated. And if you do that for long enough a bit of luck comes your way. And then it’s about making the most of that luck.”
Clever guys indeed.
