Taylor Swift Covers US ELLE, Talks Heartbreak & Writing ‘Clean’ About London-Based Ex (*Ahem* Harry Styles)

Swifty fronts the mag’s Women In Music Issue and is interviewed by Tavi Gevinson…

Taylor Swift gets candid on love and heartbreak in US ELLE’s Women In Music issue, telling interviewer slash bestie Tavi Gevinson, “One day you're in London and you realise you've been in the same place as your ex for two weeks and you're fine.” Did that burn right there, Harry Styles?

Of course, T-Swizzle could be referring to another London-based ex when talking about writing her track ‘Clean’, saying, “‘Clean’ I wrote as I was walking out of Liberty in London. Someone I used to date - it hit me that I'd been in the same city as him for two weeks and I hadn't thought about it.

“When it did hit me, it was like, Oh, I hope he's doing well. And nothing else.”

The 25-year-old fronts ELLE’s June issue, hailed a ‘National Treasure’ in her coverline, as she rocks a sequined Dior Haute Couture catsuit and contrasting boots. Holding her acoustic guitar in the air, Taylor looks every inch the rockstar, waving goodbye to her country past.

Inside the issue, Taylor gets, well, tailored, in a seriously sexy all-black Ralph Lauren look, before slipping into yet more sequins, this time by Armani Privé.

While Swifty has previously been unlucky in love, she reveals that her friend Lena Dunham’s relationship with musician boyfriend Jack Antonoff was what inspired her song ‘You Are In Love’ – particularly the line “You’re my best friend”.

“I wrote that song about things that Lena has told me about her and Jack. That's just basically stuff she's told me. And I think that that kind of relationship - God, it sounds like it would just be so beautiful - would also be hard. It would also be mundane at times.”

US ELLE’s June issue hits newsstands on May 19th and is also available as a digital edition. All photos: Michael Thompson for ELLE.
