DJ Fresh: The UK's Ever-Evolving Musical Trendsetter
Following the news he'll play MTV Crashes Plymouth Day 2, R3wire and Varski big up the D&B superstar...
In a very saturated 'Drum & Bass' infused 'pop' market, there hasn't been many new releases in the commercial D&B genre that has really made us stop and take note.
A few years ago a certain DJ, by the name of Fresh, started a trend of big vocal led D&B, and in all honesty... nothing has really changed much. Yes we have more artists following suit, but musically, what was once revolutionary is now all very 'same old, same old.'
In our previous blog we spoke of the constant need for artists to develop and evolve their sounds to move with trends, so when presented with the latest instalment from DJ Fresh, you can forgive us for expecting to hear a certain sound... Ooh but how we were mistaken.
'Believer' doesn't follow the current crop of commercial D&B, it doesn't follow D&B at all for that matter. Instead, Fresh & Adam F (a D&B heavyweight from way back when) have come with a sound so (excuse the pun) fresh, all the while taking us back 20 years to the almost forgotten time of 'Jungle' music. Don't get us wrong, writing this blog are two of the biggest jungle heads out there and we couldn't be happier about this. Fresh is once again reminding us why he is, simply put, one of the best music minds in the industry today and fully deserving of all the acclaim he receives.
'Believer' leads with refreshing break beats and a strong lead vocal from Yolanda. It builds to a raw, rolling, gritty bass drop that can only be described in two words... JUNGLIST MASSIVE!
It is a sound that dominated the underground 20 years ago, lead by producers such as DJ Hype, Metalheads (the sick logo guys) and an individual who also had a hand in 'Believer' Ray Keith (Who can forget Terrordome!)
All the elements of old and new come together perfectly to give, in our opinion, a trend setting hit. Our moneys on more D&B artists who you may be familiar with shifting to a more jungle infused sound.
DJ Fresh doesn't follow, he creates and sets trends in music. A true innovator of our time.
DJ Fresh will be joining us on stage again at MTV Crashes Plymouth Day 2, with Club MTV on Thursday 23rd July. He will play alongside Oliver Heldens, Route 94, David Zowie and other special guests.
Words: R3wire & Varski.
