BASSWEIGHT: DUBSTEP’S FIRST FEATURE DOCUMENTARY‏

BASSWEIGHT is a feature-length documentary in which we get to look into the dubstep world from its early beginnings in Croydon, south London. We’re shown how the sound and culture of dubstep was born and how a mixture of different styles of music came together to form the early sound of dub and then how it gradually transformed into the global monster sound that it is now, taking over dancefloors and radio stations worldwide etcetera, etcetera...

The documentary shows how dubstep went from being played at popular club nights such as FWD>> and DMZ in the UK, to having club nights all across Europe, Brazil and even Japan booking dubstep acts. There are various in-depth interviews with some of the key players in the scene who were there right from the beginning, such as Kode 9, Benga, Skream, Mary Anne Hobbs and Plastician, as well many other DJs, producers and promoters who were involved in pushing dubstep through. We also get to see the impact that it has had on their lives and what it means to them to be involved with such a special community that has developed over the years. There is a real insight into how the sound generally progressed into something special.

Various clips and pictures are shown throughout the film from some of the legendary club nights and tours that dubstep has been to, which makes it even more of a great watch. Each producer and DJ has their own style and sound when it comes to making the music itself and that is what makes dubstep so special, I’ve never witnessed another genre of music that has so many different levels and styles coming from mainly one tempo. This documentary has been a very long time coming, but this it definitely the right time for it to be released. I think it’s important that we remember where dubstep came from, who was there to make it happen and why it was started in the first place.

I would recommend purchasing this simply because everyone seems to have a view on what dubstep is these days, but for me this is one of the first real insights to the genre on film. You get to see where the sound came from, to now slowly taking over the mainstream and yet remaining underground at the same time.

The BASSWEIGHT documentary will be available online and in selected stores from mid-October.
