The BRIT Awards took place last night at London’s O2, and the live show was not without slight glitches. The night saw the UK’s golden girl, Adele, get controversially cut off mid-speech, George Michael slurring and random people drifting into the cameras view. However, the night proved to be triumphant in wins, with Adele and Ed Sheeran dominating the ceremony...
The night kicked off with the host of the show, James Corden, offering a short tribute to our recently lost legend, Whitney Houston. Adele was the first to snag an award for British Female Solo Artist, which was presented to her by Kylie Minogue. The Londoner thanked the fans for letting her be herself, saying: "No one has made me feel I have to be any different.”
Jessie J and Jack Whitehall then presented the International Male Solo Artist award to Bruno Mars, who later performed ‘Just The Way You Are’. Emeli Sande was given a mention for winning the Critics’ Choice Award, which had been announced prior to the big night. After that, it was time for Ed Sheeran to take to the stage and sing a beautiful rendition of his hit, ‘Lego House’.
GQ’s best dressed male, Tinie Tempah, then came on stage to announce the Best British Single award – where Adele, Ed Sheeran, Example and Jessie J had been nominated. The winner was One Direction, which was the glory moment for 14 year olds around the country. Rihanna then graced the stage in a gorgeous slinky gown to accept her award for International Female Solo Artist. The new blonde also hit up the stage later in the night to perform ‘We Found Love’, which was very over-the-top. Typical RiRi!
Amy Winehouse was also honoured on the night, with interview snippets, pictures and her music on show. It was nice to see the BRITs dedicate some time to Amy, as her loss is still deeply felt within the music industry. Plan B introduced the next award for British Male Solo Artist and appeared rather drunk. Oops! Ed Sheeran was announced the winner and came out suited and booted, to the delight of his mummy. Mr Sheeran gave a lovely and very humbled speech, reminding us why we love him so much.
Adele also took to the stage to perform 'Rolling in the Deep'. She hit amazing notes, looked stunning, chose not to miss out the swear words and put up some ghetto gun fingers after the performance. 6 Grammy Awards later, and it’s still like our girl never left West Norwood. A unique and beautiful breed.
After some more performances, Ed took to the stage again to accept his second award of the night for British Breakthrough Act. The 21-year-old is clearly still getting used the spotlight, but made yet another endearing speech. Ed said he was going to party in celebration of his recent birthday afterwards, but went missing later in the night. Either he drank too much or was just feeling a little overwhelmed.
Adele entered the stage yet again, as she later won British Album Of The Year for her best-selling record, '21'. The singer began her speech, saying that she was "so proud to be flying the British flag." James Corden then went up to Adele claiming he was "so sorry." Adele responded by saying: "Are you about to cut me off? Can I just say then, goodbye and I'll see you next time round", all before flipping the bird amidst the audience booing at the BRITs for their disrespect towards Adele.
An ITV Spokesman explained: "The BRITs is a live event. Unfortunately, the programme was over running and we had to move on. We would like to apologise to Adele for the interruption." A BRITs spokesman followed ITV's statement: "We regret this happened and we send our deepest apologies to Adele that her big moment was cut short this evening due to the live show over-running. We don't want this to undermine her incredible achievement in winning our night's biggest award. It tops off what's been an incredible year for her."
Adele later said: "I was about to thank the British public for their support. They cut me off, sorry if I offended anyone but the suits offended me. I got cut off during my speech and flung the middle finger. But that finger was to the suits at the Brit Awards, not to my fans."
Despite the sticky ending, it was a decent watch.
