ROUND UP: ASIAN MUSIC AWARDS 2012

The Asian Music Awards took place on Thursday of last week and saw many stars head down to the Wembley Arena for a night of celebrations. Not only were artists celebrating their nominations and awards, but the ceremony itself was relishing the achievement of making it to its tenth anniversary. On the night, BBC Asian Network presenter Tommy Sandhu presented the awards alongside the stunning Sarah-Jane Crawford; the 1Xtra DJ kept the audience on the ball with several different outfit changes on the night…

The night’s biggest winner was nephew of legendary Pakistani singer the late Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan; Rahat Fateh Ali Khan. The singer headlined the event, and also won the most awards, namely for ‘Best-Selling Download’, ‘Best International Act’ and ‘Best International Act of the Decade’.

Eastenders actress and singer Preeya Kalidas managed to bag the ‘Best Female’ act whilst singer Arjun bagged the ‘Best Urban Act’.

Sponsored by Lebara mobile, the best British Act of the Decade went to Jay Sean, who sadly couldn’t be there on the night. However, the ‘Ride It’ singer did have an intimate Q&A prior to the event, where we spoke to the singer – look out for our interview coming to The Wrap Up soon. The Young Money member also took the award for ‘Best Male’.

M.I.A was another worldwide act to win an award, grabbing the win for ‘B4U Best Video’ with the cinematic video for ‘Bad Girls’.

Rapper Chip came down to show his support to the event, tweeting that he was ‘looking for an Asian girl tonight’ alongside a picture of him on the blue carpet. We also saw MOBO founder Kanya King and Kojo the comedian take the stage to present an award.

Following his hit ‘Wonder’ with Emeli Sande, producer Naughty Boy also gained a win at the show, snagging the ‘Best Non-Asian Music Producer’ award. Southall-bred Punjabi Hit Squad rightly won the ‘Best Club DJ’ award, receiving recognition for their work on the Brit-Asian music scene with now-classic tracks such as ‘Hai Hai’.
