Neelam Gill: “Khloe Kardashian Is My Type Of Person!”
The Burberry model spills on her favourite Kardashian, Naomi Campbell and whether she’d rather hang out with Miley or Biebs…
By Portis Wasp
If you’re a British babe who has her sights set on mega stardom, modelling for Burberry is your golden ticket to fame, riches and a table at the Chiltern Firehouse. The designer brand has helped launch the careers of fashion’s hottest foxes, with our gals Cara D, Suki Waterhouse, Edie Campbell, Jourdan Dunn, and Rosie Huntington-Whiteley all going on to have the kinds of careers we’d totally kill for.
So who is next to experience this once in a lifetime fantasy courtesy of fashion’s Wonka himself, Christopher Bailey? Our money’s on Neelam Gill, the Coventry-born 19-year-old who made her fashion debut earlier this year in Burberry’s spring/summer 2014 campaign. Not only is she the first British Indian to model for the brand, but Nelly, as she likes us to call her, is a huge fan of the Kardashians, loves a good bargain from Topshop, considers Naomi her fashion idol, and would love to have a 2Pac-themed rap off with Biebs.
In short, Neelam is officially our new girl crush. So why wouldn’t we want to get to know this British supermodel-in-training a little better…?
MTV Style: Hello Neelam! How are you?
Neelam Gill: Hi! I'm feeling amazing because I'm answering these questions from New York – so life is good! Woohoo! It's my first time here.
MTV Style: How exciting! Talk us through an average day in the life of you?
Neelam: Wake up at around six, eat breakfast and shower, get ready, pack my backpack with my portfolio and then make my way to my castings for the day. When I'm not booked on a shoot I usually have at least six or seven castings. If I am booked on a shoot the hours are around 9-6, but editorials can finish later. Then I go back to my apartment, collapse on the sofa and watch TV, make my dinner, have a bath, read, and then go to bed ready for the next day of madness.
MTV Style: Congratulations on your Burberry campaign by the way - that must have been very exciting for you?
Neelam: Thank you. It was one of the best experiences of my life so far and I'll cherish those memories forever. I'm just so grateful I got to experience so much at such a young age, work with such an incredible team and I'm especially proud that I'm the first British Indian to model for the brand... That makes me feel happy and really privileged.
MTV Style: Did you get to keep the trench you wore for the shoot?
Neelam: Now that would be telling!!!
MTV Style: As you are fairly new to modelling, which fellow British babes do you look up to in the industry - and why?
Neelam: Naomi Campbell, because I feel like she has paved the way and shown models, like me, that you can be a businesswoman. I also look up to Jourdan [Dunn]. She's so beautiful, inside and outside, and I love the fact that she hasn't let her success go to her head. Whenever I speak to her she always makes me laugh and gives great advice. She just keeps it real.
MTV Style: What would be your dream job to book next?
Neelam: I'd love to do a fragrance campaign, I think that would be really fun. I also have other dreams to accomplish in modelling, but I have to keep some of my secrets to myself!
MTV Style: Is there a celeb or model whose style you can't get enough of at the moment?
Neelam: That's a tough one, because I love different elements of people's style, but if I were to choose one person it would have to be Carine Roitfeld. She is a true style icon and she always looks effortlessly cool.
MTV Style: How would you describe your personal style?
Neelam: Probably quite biker-inspired, I wear dark colours, a lot of leather, and always have the same silhouette - loose fitted top, skinny jeans, big boots and either my Burberry trench or biker.
MTV Style: So you did get to keep your trench! What high street shops are we mostly likely to find you in snapping up a bargain?
Neelam: Topshop, All Saints, Zara and Diesel.
MTV Style: We also read that you're a fan of the Kardashians… If you could be BFFs with any member of the family, who would you choose and why?
Neelam: Khloe. She's my type of person!!! Crazy and funny, but kind-hearted. Plus she is kinda similar to me, because she always annoys her sisters, which I do too.
MTV Style: If you had attended Kimye's wedding, what would you have bought the glam couple as a wedding gift?
Neelam: A duvet set with Mr and Mrs West on the pillow.
MTV Style: If we gave you £20 and a choice of spending the day with Biebs or Miley Cyrus, who would you choose to hang out with, and what would you do?
Neelam: Sorry Miley, but I'd choose Justin Bieber. I'd buy a 2Pac Greatest Hits album and challenge Justin to a rap off, even though I know for a fact I'd win, because I'm OBSESSED with him.
MTV Style: A guilty pleasure you can't seem to quit?
Neelam: Buying lingerie! It's my new hobby and it needs to stop because I'm spending a fortune. I can't walk past a shop without going in and buying a matching set; La Perla, Victoria's Secret, I go to them all. The other day I had a few hours to kill in between my castings and just went crazy in the Selfridges lingerie department.
MTV Style: A song that makes your heart skip a beat?
Neelam: August Alsina’s Right There. His voice makes me melt inside. I have butterflies just from saying his name.
MTV Style: Every great supermodel needs a good nickname; just between you and us, what should we call you next time we chat?
Neelam: Nelly or Nelson, that's my family nickname ¬- don't ask why, they're a bunch of weirdos.
MTV Style: And lastly Nelly, what's the last white lie you told someone?
Neelam: I'm not just saying this to sound like an angel but I don't lie! People who know me know how honest I am. If I'm feeling a certain way I can't hide that, my face says it all. I guess it's better to be that way though!
