Avatar is about to overtake Titanic as the most commercially successful film of all time.

Estimates say the 3D blockbuster is just $2 million away from the boat based flick’s record of $1, 843m taken at cinemas worldwide.

Director James Cameron now stands to break his own record- having directed both Titanic and Avatar.

The sci-fi movie is expected to gain multiple Oscar nominations when they are announced next week.

Avatar won two awards at the Golden Globes earlier this month for Best Movie and Best Director.
