Cheryl Cole is to become a charity ambassador to help fight the spread of malaria, and will return to Africa as soon as this year’s X Factor finishes to record a piece for BBC’s Comic Relief.
The Fight For This Love singer plans to travel to Uganda to meet families of malaria victims and to hand out mosquito nets and medication to local people, according to a report in The Sunday Mirror.
“It is a very brave decision. Cheryl has thought long and hard about it,” a friend told the tabloid. "This is a life-changing, landmark experience for her. She’s seen how malaria destroys people’s lives and now has first-hand knowledge of just how serious it is."
The Girls Aloud star contracted the disease while on holiday in Tanzania in June. Now it seems she is keen to help other families who have been stricken with the disease. “Cheryl got the best care possible when she got back from Tanzania and she is very grateful for it,” the sourced explained.
“But she is aware that millions of Africans are not so lucky. After what she has been through, you might have thought Africa was the last place she’d be wanting to go to.
“But the reverse is true. She wants to get out there as soon as The X Factor has been wrapped up.”
