Bowie’s ‘Cool’ with Craig

Craig David gets the legendary rockers blessing he tells MTV News

Its one thing finding a sample you want to use, but getting it cleared is a whole other ball game (just ask Kanye who had to get Jamie Foxx to help him secure the Ray Charles hook on Gold Digger), so when Craig David decided he wanted to sample a tiny part of David Bowies Lets Dance, you can imagine his apprehension.

I really wanted to put my stamp on it but so much goes into using a sample, I mean I know how protective I am over my own music and would hate the thought of someone mucking around with it he told MTV News.

He continued: I hadnt realised what a massive hit Lets Dance had been (No. 1 US & UK in 1983) so when David Bowie saw what I wanted to do and said he was cool with me using it, it felt great.

Hot Stuff, the first single off of Craigs new album Trust Me is released on November 5, but he says he doesnt get nervous anymore: Im much more relaxed now. Chart positions are still important to me but its all about longevity, so the reviews and feedback from the fans mean more to me now.

Judging by the reaction of audiences at Ronnie Scotts this week (Craig is playing 4 sold out nights at the famous jazz venue) then hes back in business: They loved Hot Stuff. The manager of the club told me how unusual it is for the crowd to get up off of their seats, so its all good.

Catch Making The Video - Hot Stuff on MTV ONE, 28th October @ 4.30pm.
