Cynthia Nixon is to marry long term lesbian lover Christine Marinoni

Sex And The City star Cynthia Nixon has announced she is engaged to long term girlfriend Christine Marinoni.

The couple announced their engagement at a rally for gay rights in New York City on Sunday evening.

In a previous interview Nixon said 'I think we would definitely [get married] if it became legal in New York,'

The couple will follow in the footsteps of US TV host Ellen DeGeneres and Portia de Rossi, and plan to have a high profile lesbian wedding in the fall.

Nixon - who plays redhead lawyer Miranda in Sex And The City - will join her fellow cast members Sarah Jessica Parker, Kim Cattrall and Kristin Davis on the set of Sex And The City The Movie 2 later this year.
