Following in the footsteps of previous winners Adele, Florence + the Machine, Ellie Goulding and last year's victor Jessie J, Sande has received the prize - which is chosen by a panel of industry experts.
The Scottish singer-songwriter, who recently enjoyed chart success with Professor Green collaboration Read All About It, beat second placed-Maverick Sabre and soul singer Michael Kiwanuka, who came third, in order to bag the prize.
Speaking of her winning her first Brit, the 24-year old stated: "To win a Brit Award so early in my career is beyond a dream come true. I am overwhelmed to be the recipient of such a prestigious award. Thank you so much."
Emeli, whose debut LP Our Version of Events is due for released in February, will now take to the stage at The Brit Awards nominations launch on 12th January 2012 at London's Savoy Hotel.
As well as Sande already taking home an award, Brit-pop band Blur will also be honoured with the Outstanding Contribution To Music accolade at the ceremony, which takes place on 21st February 2012 at the O2.
