Damon Albarn is working on an opera based on the life of an Elizabethan alchemist.

The musician has recently been busy with his cartoon group Gorillaz and reforming Blur but has found time to prep another project.

Albarn will team up with artist Jamie Hewlett and graphic novel writer Alan Moore for the project.

Speaking to NYMag Albarn explained: “It's based on the life of John Dee, who was a very influential force in Elizabethan Europe, especially England.

“He was responsible for creating the concept of the British Empire. So he affects all our lives in one way or another. He was an alchemist. It's about his life.”

The frontman continued: “I've just been reading about Hermetic magic and catalysts and philosophy… And it's been brilliant.”

Damon has already completed one opera with collborator Hewlett- Monkey: A Journey To The West.

Gorillaz play two live dates in London this week. Fans will be able to watch a live webstream of the April 30 gig featuring video animation, artwork and film at http://gorillaz.mtv.com
