The action-comedy- which is released in August- stars Brad Pitt and tells the story of a group of Jewish soldiers in France during World War 2.

Also in the movie are Samuel L Jackson, Mike Myers, Diane Kruger and German star Christoph Waltz.

Critics in Cannes have so far given it a mixed reception. The Guardian called it a “catastrophe” and a “armour plated turkey.”

BBC reporter Emma Jones said Basterds is  “western meets war movie” which can’t touch Pulp Fiction but that Tarantino is still “the king of Trashy cinema.”

Empire’s correspondent called it: “A masterful ride… that leaves you shaken, stirred but feeling very, very glad to be alive.”

Total Film claimed to “love every minute” while Film 4 said the 2 hour 40 minute long flick was a “richly enjoyable dramatic action-adventure.”

Handing the movie three stars, The Telegraph said "It’s not so much inglorious as undistinguished."
