After a close chart battle, X Factor finalists JLS have beaten Robbie Williams to the album top spot.

The boy-band, who came second to Alexandra Burke on the talent show last year, went straight to number 1 with their debut LP, despite tough competition from the Bodies singer and indie crooners Snow Patrol.

However, the race to the top was very close with the London boy band beating Robbie by a margin of less than 1%.

Williams reportedly phoned the boys to congratulate them on their chart triumph as the band posted on their Twitter page: Oh my my my...I am absolutely stunned by todays result!!!! I can't believe we are no1 album, seriously guys…you lot are AMAZING!!!!!!”

Their self entitled album has also become the fastest-selling debut album by a UK group since the Arctic Monkeys' 2006 release Whatever People Say I Am, That's What I'm Not.

When talking to MTV News, the Jack the Lad Swing boys said: “It just feels absolutely incredible for us to get number 1, we feel like people really believe in us.”

They added: “We feel were getting a lot of support out here and our fans are the best in the world and we love them very much. We’re just going to celebrate with them by giving the best tour possible in February.”

In other chart news, the Black Eyed Peas beat Leona Lewis to the number 1 spot in the singles chart with Meet Me Halfway.

The foursome, who appeared on the X Factor last weekend, denied the Happy singer of scoring a number one from her new album Echo.

JLS’ single Everybody In Love fell to number 3 with Cheryl Cole’s monster hit Fight For This Love and N-Dubz’ new tune I Need You completing the top 5.
