Justin Timberlake has been named the favourite to star in the forthcoming remake of Dirty Dancing, nearly 25 years on from the original film.
UK bookmakers have tipped the Friends With Benefits actor to star as Johnny Castle, made famous by Patrick Swayze in the 1987 original. Justin has odds of 3/1 to win the highly sought-after role, ahead of Thor actor Chris Hemsworth at 6/1 and Zac Efron at 8/1.
The film will be directed by Kenny Ortega, who directed High School Musical 1-3 and the Michael Jackson documentary This Is It. Ortega choreographed all the dance scenes in the original Dirty Dancing.
Liongate Films president Joe Drake wouldn’t discuss casting decisions just yet, but said the time was perfect for a remake of the modern classic. “Amazingly it has been almost 25 years since the original film was released. We believe that the timing couldn’t be better to modernize this story on the big screen, and we are proud to have Kenny Ortega at the helm,” he said.
Production is set to begin before the end of the year with a release date in 2013.
