INTERVIEW: Corrine's Legendary Duet

We catch up with Corrine Bailey Rae and hear about her performance, Phil Collins and how to make a difference

17:08, Saturday, 7 July 2007

How are you enjoying the day?

"It's one of the first sunny day for ages, enjoying the weather - a lot of good, positive energy. We all believe that every invidicale can make a difference out there. It's exciting to be out there, can't wait to do my gig."

Phil Collins told us earlier that he wanted to make being Green sexy - did he manage it?

"I don't really go for older guys, but I think Johnny Borrell or Kasabian might have had a better shot at that. It's making it mainstream which is important, and also, I was saying this earlier.

"I fell like the solutions for climate change so far have all been really middle class - like, oh next time your changing your really expensive car make it a hybrid. Or install solar panels on your roof.

"But really, what we should be saying to people is that everyone can make a difference. If you got to the corner shop and you normally take loads of plastic bags, this time just go with a shopping bag. Let's just stop using our resources"

You seem quite switched on - how green are you?

"I think it's something I'm just getting into. I think when you're poor you're quite green! Now I've got more money, I don't catch buses, I catch planes now. But I want to use my position I want to hassle my local MP to get Leeds going more green - we've just got an MP in Gordon Browns new cabinet and I'd like to get more green power in Leeds."

We're thinking of starting a campaign called the Ground John Travolta Campaign -would you join?

Oh that - the 707 passenger plane - the huge passenger plane that he should take other people on? We need to change the way we're uselessly wasting resources definitely.

Do you think that's one fo the important things today - political awareness?

Sure, our generation is so into being individual that I think we forget sometimes that we're also part of a mass movement. There are millions of people who think this way.

What would you message be for the billions of people watching today?

Make simple changes - share cars, use trains, switch off lights, take the plugs out of the wall -take canvass bag when you go shopping. It takes 500 years to get rid of the plastic bag. It all adds up.

Is there a danger that the music over shadows the issues?

I think it's like the way comic relief works. We're there, laughing away, and then we get an image of a starving child that we wouldn't have seen normally. But there they are. And that brings the message home.

What can we expect from you today?

Hopefully not just me looking nervous - I'll play all my big ones, a song called I'd Like To and I'll be doing a duet with John Legend, we're doing a Marvin Gaye song together. I hear he's just arrived!

Thanks very much, we can't wait!

Thankyou
