Plan B has signed on to star in the movie remake of cop show The Sweeney.

The singer, real name Ben Drew, will play Detective Sergeant George Carter, the role made famous by Dennis Waterman in the classic 1970s show. Ray Winstone will play Flying Squad boss DI Jack Regan.

The She Said singer told The Sun he was thrilled to be working with Ray and director Nick Love, who helmed The Football Factory. "It's a dream come true for me to be in a film with Ray Winstone. He is one of my favourite British actors of all time. I'm really excited about working with Nick Love in what I feel will be a challenging role for me to play."

The newspaper reports that studio bosses had been struggling to cast the role, until Plan B came along. “The film has been in the pipeline for a few years but the team behind it were waiting for the right man to be Carter,” a source explained. “Ben has emerged not only as a big chart star, but an actor with serious presence.”

The multi-talented star has also been directing his own film, a hip-hop musical called Ill Manors, which is slated for release in January 2012. He also starred alongside Michael Caine in Harry Brown.

The Sweeney will start filming soon, for release in summer 2012.
