Lesbians Ellen DeGeneres & Portia de Rossi to marry after gay ban lifted

Lesbian actress Portia de Rossi, of Ally Macbeal fame, is to marry comedian Ellen DeGeneres following a court ruling which dumps the state's ban on gay and lesbian marriages.

Ellen DeGeneres made the anouncement during the filiming of her comedy chat-show, creatively titled the Ellen DeGeneres Show, whilst de Rossi watched from the sidelines.

It came after California's Supreme Court effectively left same-sex couples in America's most populous state free to tie the knot.

"Limiting the designation of marriage to a union 'between a man and a woman' is unconstitutional and must be stricken from the statute," California Chief Justice Ron George said.

Plaintiffs and gay rights activists erupted with joy after the victory.
