Rage Against The Machine’s Tom Morello has said that the campaign to get the group’s track Killing In The Name Of to Xmas number one is “heart warming.”

The 1992 song is competing with X Factor winner Joe McElderry to claim the chart crown this Sunday. Figures on Tuesday suggested the rock group were in the lead.

Speaking to BBC 6 Music Morello said his “rebel anthem song will transcend the Christmas holidays".

He explained: “The one thing about the X Factor show, much like our own American Idol, is if you're a viewer of the show you get to vote for one contestant or the other, but you don't really get to vote against the show itself until now.”

“There are a lot of people who don't feel represented by it and this Christmas in the UK they're having their say.”

Joe McElderry- who released his song The Climb straight after winning the X Factor show- also spoke about the race.

He told Radio 1: “I think it’s the same as any other chart battle and I just hope people go out and buy it.”

“Good luck to them (RATM) as well. I haven’t heard their song but I’ll have to have a listen.”

The Climb was originally recorded by Miley Cyrus.
