Silent Christmas number one?

Cage Against The Machine campaign is launched...

There could be a silent Christmas number one this year if campaigners have their way.

Following the success of last year’s ‘Rage Against The Machine for Christmas #1’ campaign on Facebook, which kept The X Factor winner Joe McElderry off the top spot, campaigners are urging music lovers to embrace a track by American avant-garde performer John Cage.

Only problem is that his 1952 track, titled 4:33, consists of four minutes and 33 seconds of silence. Dubbed the Cage Against The Machine campaign, organisers are hoping the fervour will spread as Christmas nears and that this year’s X Factor winner – and Simon Cowell’s Syco record label – will be denied the festive number one.

Last year, Rage Against The Machine’s 1992 rap rock anthem Killing In The Name was number one at Christmas, outselling Joe McElderry’s The Climb by 50,000 downloads, to make Joe the first X Factor winner not to top the chart with their debut single.

In the run-up to Christmas Day, the  campaign’s Facebook page had over 950,000 fans and had received high-profile support from Dave Grohl, Paul McCartney, Muse and others.
