Rihanna has opened up about the tough training she went through to prepare for her role in Battleship, in which she plays an FBI agent who joins the navy to help fight aliens.

Training for her tough girl role wasn’t easy, she said, but it was authentic, as she was trained by military personnel who served in Iraq. “We worked with real military people, you know, people in the navy, people who have fought in Iraq before,” the Man Down singer explained. “They pretty much came and drilled me. This one man, Donald, he pretty much drilled me, yelled at me, cursed me, 'Ow!' Made me do pushups. Everything.

“I really wanted to say, “F**k you” right back, but then he probably would have thrown me through the window,” the star said. “I was so scared. I just stood there and looked at him like, ‘I swear I’m going to get it right, I swear, I swear, I swear I’ll be good.’”

She added that her best friend was so worried about the tough treatment RiRi was receiving the she wanted to jump in to defend her! “I remember she just kept walking around, and she would just glance at me, 'Are you OK? Did he just say 'F**k you' to you?' But I mean, it really got you in the mentality, that's the things they really go through, when they first sign up," she continued. "It's not a walk in the park."

The California King Bed hitmaker said director Peter Berg was “super enthusiastic” about the film which helped her feel at ease because she was initially very nervous on set. "I didn't know what I was doing, where I was going, why."

“He’s crazy. He really is, and so spontaneous, so nothing is memorised, it’s a real reaction every time,” she said of working with Berg. “I couldn’t ask for a better director to work with on my first film. Who warns you that you have to jump into the middle of the ocean and pretend that you’re drowning? Who does that? Him? Never.”

Battleship also stars Liam Neeson, Alexander Skarsgard and Taylor Kitsch and hits cinemas in 2012.
