US film-maker Sydeny Pollack has died of cancer aged 73. Pollack was diagnosed with cancer about nine months ago and died Monday afternoon, surrounded by family, at his home in L.A.

Pollack won praise for the 1985 drama Out Of Africa based on Isak Dinesen's 1937 memoir, which garnered 11 Oscar nominations, and won seven awards - including his pair for best director and producer.

Pollcak also directed Tootsie, with Dustin Hoffman, and The Way We Were, starring Robert Redford and Barbra Streisand.

In later years, he spent more time producing and acting, and recently starred in the romantic comedy Made of Honor.

He also played a supporting role in the legal thriller Michael Clayton, for which he served as a producer and shared a best picture Oscar nomination.
