Crash Triumphs At Oscars

And a triple win for the British contingent

Racial drama Crash walked away with the best picture gong at last nights Oscars " winning over heavy favourite Brokeback Mountain.

And it was a good night for the Brits: Rachel Weisz won the best supporting actress award for The Constant Gardener, Nick Parks Wallace And Gromit in the Curse of the Were-Rabbit was voted best animated film and Martin McDonaghs darkly comic Six Shooter scooped best short film.

And while the hotly- tipped Brokeback Mountain, which triumphed at the Golden Globes and Baftas, didnt win any acting plaudits, it still picked up three awards, including best director for Ang Lee.

Best actor went to Philip Seymour Hoffman for Capote and Reese Witherspoon took home best actress for her role as Johnny Cashs wife in Walk The Line.

George Clooney, overlooked at the Globes and Baftas, won the best supporting actor award for his controversial oil-industry thriller Syriana and used his speech to take a swipe at recent Republican criticisms of the Academy, saying: "We are a little bit out-of-touch in Hollywood. I think that's probably a good thing. We are the ones who talked about Aids when it was only being whispered....We talked about civil rights... I'm proud to be part of this Academy, proud to be part of this community."
