Despite US critics praising the Girls Aloud star during her brief appearance on the show's premiere and slamming her replacement Nicole Scherzinger for her "robotic" performance, Darnell has stood by his decision to axe Chezza.
When asked about the positive reaction the Fight For This Love singer had received, Darnell told Deadline: "It's easy to love the one that's gone, but Nicole is great too. Both are stunning but also very different. [I have] no regrets. But I also love Cheryl."
It is thought Darnell played an active role when it came to sacking the 28-year old from the US series, despite previously stating when the gorgeous Geordie landed the job that she had "the whole X Factor package" and that he loved her "charm and chemistry" with Simon Cowell.
Scherzinger failed to impress her critics Stateside, with the New York Times claiming that she was "not much more than a seat warmer", while the Chicago Tribune added that she wasn't "an obvious improvement" on Cole.
