White Lies had two massive indie hits last year and have already been all over MTV Two.
This year the young three piece from West London hope to cement their place on the indie scene with their debut album. Winning the Spanking New for 09 prize would definitely help too. We spoke to bassist Charles Cave
MTV: How did the band meet?
I met Jake in school. Weve known each other for our whole lives. The three of us all got musical instruments at the same time so we decided to learn together.
You all played together in other bands - when did you decide to become White Lies?
A year ago we decided to do our own thing and make some different music. We made Unfinished Business and Death really close to each other and that inspired us to create White Lies.
Were you all into the same music when you were younger?
The worst thing is that we were all so influenced by completely different bands. Every week we had a new one. Weve always been into Talking Heads.
When I was 14 I was into metal so I was probably listening to Def Leppard and the Mars Volta. But we still dont agree on too many bands. We all bring something completely new to the table when we come to write- so it works well.
How long did it take you to make your debut album To Lose My Life... ?
Not long at all. We were under a lot of pressure. We had 5 songs written and the label told us to record the album. It was written in about two or three months which has left the album feeling very urgent and desperate. We were so determined to get it done but I dont regret the way it was made at all.
Do you feel the pressure?
We put so much pressure on ourselves anyway. We are the kind of people who would rather be judged on our album (than the hype). We would much rather win awards for our actual work. But it is flattering.
Tell us about the album?
The album doesnt differ from the singles really. Its lucky because it has this great consistency and cohesion to it. All the songs have pretty solid foundations. The songs could have been written 10 years previously- theres an element of timelessness to it.
Which single comes out next?
The title track comes out in a week. Its about managing to draw the line between realism and romance. Its trying to encourage people to think in a romantic way.
What are your goals for 2009?
We dont really set ourselves goals in that sense. We want to play to as many people as possible. Its not about record sales its about connecting with people. Wed love to do some good festival shows.
