Wyclef Jean Confirms Haiti Presidency Bid

Wyclef Jean has announced that he will be running to be the President of earthquake hit nation Haiti.

The Fugees rapper is said to have submitted the paperwork yesterday to formally declare that he will be running for the Viv Ansanm (Live Together) political party.

Wyclef was greeted by dozens of cheering supporters as he arrived at the electoral council office in Port-au-Prince which was severely hit by the earthquake earlier this year.

Speaking of his decision to run for the presidency, Jean stated: "It's a moment in time and in history. It's very emotional."

"I would like to tell President Barack Obama that the United States has Obama and Haiti has Wyclef Jean.

He added: "My focus on helping Haiti turn a new corner will only grow stronger."

There has been growing speculation to whether the rapper would put himself up to be the President of Haiti but he admitted that it was the earthquake that hit his home country that swayed him to run this year.

Jean claimed: "If not for the earthquake, I probably would have waited another 10 years before doing this."

Wyclef will now compete against his uncle Raymond Joseph, Haiti's current ambassador to the US ex-Prime Minister Jacques-Edouard Alexis and former diplomat Garaudy Laguerre in the November elections.
