New Music Round-Up: Harry Styles, Niall Horan, HAIM, Halsey & Much More
Also featuring Mac Demarco, Jonas Blue, LP and more!
HAIM - 'Want You Back'
It feels good to have HAIM back. We had the not-officially-a-single ‘Right Now’, with a live video directed by God Amongst Men* Paul Thomas Anderson last week, but now we have a track that's officially-a-single in the shape of ‘Want You Back’.
“Just know that I want you back,” Danielle Haim sings in the chorus of this slick, funky single that wouldn’t be out of place in an 80s coming of age film. ‘Want You Back’ is on repeat in the Taylor Swift household (“On. Repeat. Til. The. End. Of. Time‼!!!,” she wrote on Instagram), and with good reason…
*He's just a film director who's good at his job.
Niall Horan – ‘Slow Hands’
Here’s a change of pace. If ‘This Town’ was a little too soft for you, ‘Slow Hands’ sees the 1D star return with a bass-ier, sexier, swaggering new single.
Halsey – ‘Eyes Closed’
Following Halsey’s intense directorial debut with ‘Now Or Never’, ‘Eyes Closed’ was co-written with The Weeknd, a man who always writes about sex and desire (and definitely not rainbows and gummy bears), so this dark, sinister (and welcome) sound won’t come as a surprise to many.
Get excited for Halsey’s new album, Hopeless Fountain Kingdom, coming this June.
Harry Styles – ‘Sweet Creature’
OK, so Harry dropped this soft and pretty acoustic track earlier this week but…NEW HARRY STYLES! Click play. The new album is out next week. (!)
LCD Soundsystem – ‘call the police’ & ‘american dream’
With a brand new record set to drop in the not too distant future, James Murphy & co are back with two all-in-lowercase new singles. As he mentioned in a Facebook post, Murphy has never been happier writing music than he has been with this new album, and that’s more than evident in ‘call the police’. (‘american dream’, with lyrics like “you’re the only one who’s been destroying all the fun,” is 'a bit' more downbeat.)
Want to see LCD Soundsystem live soon? Who doesn’t? Speaking of new shows, Murphy said in more lowercase letters: “[we want to play] full shows that aren't so big that you feel like you need binoculars to see if pat is actually behind the drums or if it's louis ck or something.”
Jonas Blue Ft. William Singe – ‘Mama’
Just in time for summer, Jonas is back with a brand new banger…
Galantis – ‘Hunter’
The Swedes dial down the BPM on their latest release…
Kasabian - For Crying Out Loud
They’ve topped the UK charts with their last four albums. Can they make it a fifth?
(Side note: Kasabian have got one of the best album covers of the year so far with For Crying Out Loud.)
Mac Demarco – This Old Dog
Mac Demarco, music’s loveable goofball funny-man, hasn’t grown up, as This Old Dog’s mature, measured sound might make you believe: he’s simply inviting listeners to check out another facet of his personality that has long been pushed to the side. (Who can blame us for not noticing: it’s difficult to see the depth within a lovely man with great hats who sticks drumsticks up their butt on stage.) This Old Dog is a great listen. Mac Demarco can do no wrong. Hit. Play.
LP - Lost On You
She’s made waves with her track ‘Lost On You’ and now you can hear her ‘LP’ of the same name!
