Nicki Minaj: I Was Suicidal
The rapper considered taking her own life before she was famous…
Nicki Minaj has opened up about a dark period in her past when she considered suicide.
The Pink Friday rapper blamed her low mood on her struggles to make it in the music industry and the pressure she felt to support her mother financially.
"I kept having doors slammed on my face," Nicki told the US edition of Cosmopolitan magazine. "I felt like nothing was working. I had moved out on my own, and here I was thinking I'd have to go home. It was one dead end after another.
“At one point, I was, like, 'What would happen if I just didn't wake up?' That's how I felt. Like maybe I should just take my life?"
The 28-year-old also revealed the stress of growing up with an abusive father. “He would beg, cry, stalk us. One time, he pulled my mother out of a car and dragged her for two blocks,” she remembered. “After that, I had a phobia about unlocked doors. Anywhere my mother and I were, I made sure the door was locked, because that was my only way to protect her.”
But Nicki said she had overcome all her pre-fame struggles and expected marriage, babies and continued success in her future. "I will have put out five albums and will have an Oscar and Grammys," she predicted. "And I will be getting married and, a couple of years after that will have a bun in the oven... My whole life is about being Nicki Minaj now. It's a never-ending saga."
