Nintendo Switch Could Be Worn On Your Face
This would be amazing.
The Nintendo Switch is famous for being a console that undocks to become a gaming tablet for on the move play. But when it arrives there may be more to it according to patents that show it could also be head-mounted.
Yup, the patents show off a wearable head-mounted virtual reality style housing that the tablet could be docked in. The result would be that gaming could become totally immersive in three dimensions and 360-degree views.
Virtual reality headsets like Oculus Rift, HTC Vive and Gear VR are all growing in popularity for gaming. It would make sense for Nintendo to plan for that future by creating its own option and since the Switch is going to be known for adapting, this could really work.
The Nintendo Switch is rumoured to have a 6.2-inch, 720p display. If that is the case it won’t look very good worn right in front of your eyes, with that relatively low resolution. There is also mention of an infrared sensor to detect hand movements so you may be able to interact with the headset while gaming. The patent even talks of recognising the wearer using the camera to detect the user’s pulse in their hand.
Of course this is a patent so it doesn’t mean it’s definitely coming - just something Nintendo has looked into. That said Ninty plans to unveil more about the Switch console in January ahead of its release in March.
Most patents loosely describe a product without specific naming but this directly mentions it would be for the Nintendo Switch suggesting it could be coming for real. It may not arrive at launch but could come later since it should not require much to implement, outside of a software update and a potentially cheap headset.
We’re crossing all our fingers and toes until January. Well, we would, if we weren’t already playing Super Mario Run on iOS constantly.
