The hot news this week revolves around a mysterious trailer that's been appearing before the Transformers' US release.

For those of you who aren't in the loop, the trailer opens with handycam images of a party packed with people in their twenties. Halfway through, a distant rumble, like an earthquake, shakes the building. The crowd rush to the roof and see an almighty explosion launch rubble and debris into the air, some of which takes chunks out of neighbouring buildings. They charge downstairs to find the street descending into chaos, and then, after what can only be described as an ear splitting roar, the head of the Statue of Liberty skidds down the road and a date appears on screen. No title, no info. Just a date.

The film is currently being referred to as Cloverfield, and we know it comes from Lost producer and M:I:3 Director J. J. Abrams. Imdb lists it simply as an Untitled J.J. Abrams Project which "Revolves around a monster attack in New York as told from the point of view of a small group of people."

Speculation as to which monster is leading the attack is rife - which the current front runners being Godzilla, Voltron and, least likely, but wouldn't it be fun, Donkey Kong.

With Abrams at the helm, if Lost is anything to go by, you can bet the speculation will be going on for a while yet though…
