Oblivion Review

Tom Cruise saves the world, yet again...

Tom Cruise plays courageous Commander Tron Legacy director Joseph Kosinki’s visually stunning, but narratively confusing, post-apocalyptic sci-fi flick Oblivion.
The film starts well. Earth is almost entirely destroyed as a result of alien invasion, and these scenes are both hard-hitting and powerful.

The human species are victorious in battle, with Jack Harper and his ‘effective team’ partner Victoria (played by BAFTA rising star nominee Andrea Riseborough) the picture perfect couple left to monitor and control what remains of our almost-lifeless world.
Uptight Controller Victoria remains in their HQ based up in the clouds, while the brave and curious Jack takes regular trips below to shoot down any invaders, nicknamed ‘Scavs’.
A narrative twist appears in the form of Julia (played by Bond girl Olga Kurylenko), whose image Jack cannot shake from his dreams and his memory. But this is one in a line of narrative twists that become increasingly confusing.
The film is full of action, thrills and romance, but lacks coherence and depth - while Morgan Freeman’s appearance as Beech is jarring and the 80s soundtrack is altogether off-putting.
