One Night Only: “We’re Not Kids Anymore”
ONO frontman George Craig on the band’s long-awaited return…
One Night Only made a grand old return to our eardrums earlier this month, when they unveiled new single ‘Get Around To It’, their first release in well over two years. While members George and James Craig, Jack Sails, Mark Hayton and Dan Parkin were previously known for their indie vibes and Burberry campaign, the boys have grown up, and taken their tunes in a whole new direction.
The video for ‘Get Around To It’ will premiere exclusively on MTV.co.uk on Monday 29th September, but before all that, we caught up with frontman George to hear more about One Night Only 2.0.
MTV UK: Tell us the story behind your new single ‘Get Around To It’…
George Craig: The opening riff was written while a few of us were messing around in our old rehearsal space. At the time I remember us being quite excited by it, but it really started to take hold when we moved the main riff from keys to guitar, and kept a piano maintaining the basic rhythm. The lyrics came a little while later and are pretty self explanatory – it’s the familiar tale of a relationship gone bad and all the petulant nonsense that goes with it.
MTV UK: Was the title in any way inspired by the two and a half years fans have been waiting for new ONO material?
George: We have been away for some time, but the title wasn’t inspired by the gap since our last release, though it is quite fitting I suppose... We’re glad we got around to it.
MTV UK: What prompted the change in musical direction from your old material?
George: As a band we were ready to depart from the indie pop/rock sound that we made on our previous records and create something more sonically sophisticated, more in-tune with the records we listen to now.
This album is something that speaks for where we are now as a band and as people. We went back to the drawing board quite a few times with different songs, different producers, etc. When we found our direction we hit the ground running with the record. We made this album with Rupert Lyddon, who was a joy to work with.
MTV UK: How have you found the reaction from fans to ‘Get Around To It’ and B-side ‘Erase’ so far?
George: The reaction has been overwhelming from our fans; they have waited so patiently for us to give them our new music, and I think a lot of people thought we had finished up. It’s exciting to be building ourselves up again and getting this album out there.
MTV UK: When should we expect the new album and are there any surprises on there?
George: The album release date is yet to be scheduled, but I can reveal that it’s our best album to date.
MTV UK: We've been listening to your Spotify playlist of inspirations – which of the artists on there would you most like to work with and why?
George: It would be ace to work with all of them, but I think working in the era that consisted of only recording to tape with no fancy computers is something that is truly admirable, so I guess the less current artists amongst the playlist.
MTV UK: You've announced one (now sold-out) London gig for this December – any plans to take One Night Only on tour before the year is out?
George: We’re very excited about our show in December. There are no plans to get out on the road again just yet, but it’s obviously something we’d like to do in the New Year.
MTV UK: What's the most exciting thing for you about being back with new music?
George: It’s exciting to be able to show who we are now and what we sound like. I was 16 when we released our debut album, which has had the most success to date, but I’m now 24. We’re not kids anymore. It will always be hard to change that pre-conception, but this is the album that can change the game.
MTV UK: Give us a taster of what to expect from your new video, premiering exclusively on MTV.co.uk on Monday…
George: It looks like a Calvin Klein advert; it’s minimalistic and cool.
