The Scientific Reason Why Your Dreams Are Weird AF During Your Period
Just another slice of joy to add to your monthly experience.
Ever noticed that you have a series of pretty bizarre dreams when it’s ~that~ time of the month? According to actual science, there’s a reason behind the fact that your imagination goes nuts when mother nature arrives with her monthly gift.
According to Broadly – who spoke with a bunch of experts on the topic – the sleep disturbances that naturally arise when you’re on your period cause women to recall their dreams in more vivid detail than usual.
Let's all get checking out how well a bunch of grown human adults know their way around a uterus...
Dr. Irshaad Ebrahim of the London Sleep Centre pointed out that the disruption of the REM (rapid eye movement) cycle causes minor havoc on a woman’s overall quality of sleep.
For anyone without a degree in sleep patterns, the REM cycle takes place within the first 90 minutes of falling asleep and occurs several times after this throughout the night.
Another factor that makes shut-eye that bit harder to maintain is due to an influx of progesterone hormone resulting in sleep becoming more “erratic” than usual. Yippee.
OB/GYN Dr. Christiane Northrup also pointed out that the things that women dream about during their period tend to relate – at least in some small part - to their cycle.
Of course, every woman’s period is totally unique – and it might just be that you never experience those odd dreams or interrupted sleep at all. Even so, let's pour one out for the unlucky ones.
