Philip Seymour Hoffman is reported to have been found dead at his apartment in Manhattan.

TMZ reported that the 46-year-old star of The Hunger Games: Catching Fire - who won an Oscar for his lead role in Capote - was thought to have died from a drug overdose.

Hoffman played Plutarch Heavensbee in the most-recent Hunger Games movie and was scheduled to feature heavily in both of the remaining instalments of the franchise.

The Wall Street Journal quoted a law-enforcement official as confirming the sad news.

Reporter Pervaiz Shallwani wrote: "The actor was found in the bathroom of his fourth floor apartment in the Pickwick House around 11:15am by a screenwriter, who called 911, the official said."
