Friends and family of the late actor Philip Seymour Hoffman have gathered at a funeral home in New York City to say farewell to the star.

Famous faces spotted among the mourners at the Frank E Campbell Funeral Home on Manhattan's Upper East Side included Amy Adams, Cate Blanchett, Ben Stiller, Billy Crudup and Michelle Williams.

Joaquin Phoenix, Diane Sawyer and Ellen Burstyn also attended the private event - along with director Bennett Miller, who worked successfully with Hoffman on acclaimed movies Capote and Moneyball.

The wake was followed by a candlelit vigil outside the Labyrinth Theatre Company, where hundreds of fans gathered.

Hoffman was found dead in his NYC apartment at the weekend. The cause of death is still to be established but a drug overdose suspected.
