Japanese Olympian Gets A $5000 Phone Bill Playing Pokémon Go In Brazil
Trying to catch 'em all cost the gymnast some serious money.
Imagine the feeling you get when your phone bill arrives and you're the victim of all those annoying data roaming charges...
That's nothing compared to gymnast Kōhei Uchimura, who managed to rack up a massive 500,000 yen (around $5000) bill whilst playing Pokémon Go in Brazil.
The world champion, who was an gold medal winner in the 2012 Olympics, unfortunately didn't win a medal for being smartphone savvy. He'd never played Pokémon Go before but after downloading the app once he was in Sao Paolo, he managed to get hooked on catching Pokémon whilst on his breaks.
We don't blame you, Kōhei.
After seeing the bill, Kōhei 'couldn't believe his eyes' but thankfully the story has a happy ending and utter panic turned to relief...
Once he called his phone carrier to explain, they let him off with a flat daily charge of $30. Phew!
We reckon it hasn't stopped him from trying to catch 'em all. Probably best to buy a Brazillian SIM card next time though…
