WTF is Pride, And Why Does It Even Matter?

Celebrating all things LGBT+. Loudly.

YAS. We’re sure you can tell by our gloriously rainbow-coloured logo, we’re celebrating all things LGBT+. Loudly.

WHY? Well why not? And… also it’s Pride month.

We’ve been celebrating Pride all through June, so we thought we’d give you a little background on just exactly WTF is Pride, and why we’re making such a big deal about it. Let’s get started, shall we?

Okay, so WTF is Pride?

Pride is an international festival that’s all about celebrating every single person who identifies as any part of the LGBT+ community (don’t worry if you don’t know what all the letters stand for, we’ll get to that later).

It’s also about each and every one of us taking positive action against the discrimination and violence that the LGBT+ community still face. From shady comments on the street to the horrific attack in Orlando, it’s real and it still happens and we all need to do more to stop it.

So, each June, Pride organizes parades and events around the world to help increase the LGBT+ community’s visibility as a social group, as well as celebrate sexual diversity and gender variance. And, trust us, they’re also one of the best parties of the year.

WTF happens during Pride?

June was chosen to be LGBT Pride Month to commemorate the Stonewall riots that took place in New York, June 1969. A year later, bisexual rights activist Brenda Howard set up the Christopher Street Liberation Day March to remember the first anniversary of the riots. She’s known as the "Mother of Pride" for her work, and that’s why people all over the world hold Pride Marches in their cities.

Today in London is just one of those marches – London Pride – and the theme for this year’s parade is #nofilter. In the words of Pride In London, it’s asking you to do “something very simple: Live your life as you.”

Pride are encouraging everyone to share their own #nofilter moment – telling a story about a moment where either you or someone you know felt as if they could reveal their true self. It could be about coming out; sharing an interest or lifestyle choice which might be considered different or revealing something private about yourself.

They want everyone to get sharing to remind us all that no one ever deserves to live in fear, andwant to hear your story in your own words – head here to contribute yours now.

What Can I Do To Help?

Show solidarity. March in one of the many Pride Parades taking place all over the world. Volunteer to be a steward. Wear rainbow EVERYTHING. Donate to Pride. Throw your own Pride party. Share your #nofilter message on Twitter. Shout messages of support everywhere and anywhere that you can. Make sure each and every day you’re actively contributing in the fight for LGBT+ equality.

Even if I’m straight?

Of course! Pride is all about celebrating the LGBT+ community, but that doesn’t mean you can’t be the best straight ally ever. Get out there, support your LGBT+ pals and get involved with all of the above.
