Rae Morris Finds The Calm Ahead Of A Festival Storm
The 'Love Again' singer on touring, teaming up with Chris Martin and trying the fashion industry out for size...
“I feel so content when I’m touring. I can just focus on finding the right words and enjoy that calm,” says Rae Morris, reflecting on her recent string of live dates, while looking ahead to a summer of festivals we expect will be anything but calm.
The 22-year-old has had quite the year, having dropped her debut album Unguarded in January, following 2014 singles ‘Cold’ and ‘Closer’.
“I called the album ‘Unguarded’, because I made a conscious effort not to be anything but myself; it’s basically a snapshot of a period in my life,” says Rae. “There’s a song called ‘For You’ on the album, and it’s a song that no-one had really heard, unless they’d heard it live. I waited for a long time for people to hear it, because it says the most about me, and the kind of songwriting that I love.”
While ‘For You’ might be a personal favourite of the curly-haired chanteuse, it’s new single ‘Love Again’ that’s currently setting airwaves alight, and it’s even been given the Clean Bandit remix treatment. Guaranteed summer smash, no?
Co-written by Fryars, ‘Love Again’ isn’t the first time Rae has worked with her buddy, as he also features on ‘Cold’.
“To be honest I never expected to do any collaborations, I was quite happy on my own, but with Fryars it was wonderful because we’re just really great mates,” she says. “I would always like to work with people who are going to push my knowledge; I think Chris Martin or Coldplay would be my dream collaboration.”
Speaking of dreams, could the Blackpool girl be abandoning new home London for starry Los Angeles, after heading there to record Unguarded?
“I had been to LA before I went to record the album, but they were two very different trips,” Rae explains. “I didn’t actually enjoy it when I was there writing, because I would have rather been nearer home, able to reflect on who I am and where I’ve come from. It was a little too far away in that sense.
“Then I went back to record, and it was the perfect place for that, because it was so relaxed and chilled. It was wonderful. I could definitely envision myself living there at some point.”
With Dot To Dot Festival, Field Day, Forest Live and T In The Park in her immediate plans, it looks like we’ll be hanging on to Rae for a bit longer, though a starring role in Boohoo’s latest TV ad suggests the fashion industry could be just the thing to poach her.
“Fashion is wonderful, and it’s really inspiring to see someone like Joni Mitchell in something like the Saint Laurent campaign,” says Rae. “Burberry have always been wonderful with me, which has made me develop a real passion for them, but I don’t know if I’m cool enough to actually front one of their campaigns!"
Coming from the girl who’s sat front row and performed acoustic sessions for Christopher Bailey’s beloved brand, we’re pretty sure a billboard won’t be far off.
Rae’s new single ‘Love Again’ and debut album Unguarded are out now.
