This Is The Scientific Solution To Finally Getting Over Your Ex
We've all been there, going through the worst break-up of your life and thinking that your heart will 100% never learn to love again. But never fear, because scientists have finally found a way to stop the waterworks and give you a chance to let go of some of that internal anguish.
Researchers at the University of Colorado have recently discovered just how powerful the placebo effect can be in minimising the physical and emotional effects of heartbreak.
In an experiment published in the Journal of Neuroscience, researchers asked 40 participants who'd been through a recent break-up to be hooked up to a brain-imaging lab while they were shown photos of their ex and a friend.
After being subjected to the emotional pain of seeing their ex and the physical pain of being touched with a hot stimulus, scientists discovered that both factors triggered a response in the exact same region of the brain.
So yeah, that gives some *serious* weight to the claim that heartbreak is neurologically real.
Later, each participant was given a nasal spray, with half the group thinking they were receiving a "powerful analgesic effective in reducing emotional pain" while the other half were told the truth - it was just a basic saline solution.
Interestingly enough, when hooked up to the machine to repeat the initial exercise, the placebo group experienced less physical and emotional pain and in general felt heaps better than the group who knew the truth about the spray.
What that means is that if you can actually convince yourself that you're better off without your crummy ex, there's a good chance you'll eventually start to see a positive impact on both your health and happinesss.
"Just the fact that you are doing something for yourself and engaging in something that gives you hope may have an impact," suggests Tor D. Wager, a study author and professor of psychology and neuroscience.
So the real and sort-of-expected moral of the story is that wallowing in the past doesn't do you any favours and that investing your energy on the future is the best and most productive route to healing that heart for good.
