Rudimental Talk Humble Beginnings And How A Record Deal Saved Them From Poverty

Nick Grimshaw catches up with the London four-piece in all new Relentless Ultra Soundchain...

Rudimental are quickly taking over the world these days, but who would have thought that just a few years before their rise to famethey were struggling to find money for food…

In this week's Relentless Ultra Presents Soundchain, the four-piece tell all about how they started out as a band.

HostNick Grimshawasks the band how they felt when they got their first record deal. Leon, also known as DJ Locksmith, revealed how the record deal saved him from poverty, saying: "I remember that deal for me was like, 'YES! I can eat! I can put electricity in my house!'"

Fellow bandmate, Piers, then added how he couldn't afford to buy their first single when it was released: "I remember when 'Feel The Love' came out, I couldn't buy it, I had no money, I had to borrow money off someone to buy it."

'Feel The Love' propelled Rudimental into superstardom as it became THE party anthem of 2012. Now, three years later, it's still getting radio play, and continues to be the ultimate floor-filler of every night out.

With this in mind, it's strange to hear that it was sat on a shelf for two years before it was released. Locksmith says: "'Feel The Love', two years before it was released, was sitting there doing nothing."

Looking back even further, two of the band tell us that they met at the tiny age of five, and became friends from that point on. DJ Locksmith reminisces about their childhood together, saying: "Piers and I met each other as infants, when we were about five years old, and we just shared all the same interests, you know, from football to music." Aww, boys!

The Rudimental ladsalso told us about 'rinse outs' they used to have at Piers' house: 'We used to have these rinse outswe use to call them. We'd have thirty MCs over in our house with a pair of decks, we'd be listening to Wiley and Dizzee Rascal and we'd just be vibing out,' Leon explains.

He's goes on to say how they these gatherings made a positive impact on their neighbourhood in Hackney, East London, explaining: "Piers' house and his parents were so welcoming, they probably saved some lives, you know, some of the youths. We didn't grow up in the best area."
