Remi Nicole Interview
The sweet solo star talks to MTV about meeting Elton John and her superb feelgood single Go Mr Sunshine
North London girl Remi is the latest hot tip on the music scene. Already compared to Lily Allen because of her down to earth lyrics and everygirl attitude.
And the 24 year old is a similar breath of fresh air. Her music, like cool slice of summer Go Mr Sunshine, is bubblegum pop but is smart at the same time. We went to meet the friendly and beautiful singer before she takes over the mainstream
When did you first get into music and realize thats what you wanted to do?
Remi: It was last summer when I started playing seriously. I really enjoyed writing songs. I didnt think Id want to do it as my career and didnt think Id have the opportunity to.
When did you realize you could sing?
Remi: Id done it for years, but Id never been serious until someone said, youre really good and then it snowballed from there.
What are you about lyrically?
Remi: Theyre all about different things. Literally anything. Ive written a song about a friend coming back from a bad date. Ive written a song about being pissed off. Ive written a song about arguments Ive had with my family.
How would you describe your sound? What genre are you?
Remi: Pop- I know its not cool to say that, but I dont care, cause it is. My four year old cousin can sing me these songs back. People who are 40 or 50 that can relate to it as well, so I think its pop music.
You were noticed with the song Rock n Roll is it your mission statement?
Remi: No, its just a song that I wrote. Theres more to me than just that. I was having an argument with my cousin, and they think its weird that my main music is not hip hop and R & B. I just prefer melody, and guitar music. And thats what that songs about. Its not like a massive statement.
What did it feel like when you got signed?
Remi: It was weird. All my friends were like, you should be so excited, you should be so excited. And I just was normal. All I kept saying was, theyve given me this money, but I havent done anything. Theyve given me an advance and I havent done anything. Im still not going overboard until I sell some records. I watched Totally Boy Band, on MTV!
Whats the first single Go Mr Sunshine about?
Remi: Its the first song I wrote actually. I wrote it at work sitting at the office. I was just looking out the window, and it was just funny that as soon as the sun comes out how people get their kit off and smile. Its just about the streets, and sunny times.
So what does the album sound like?
Remi: No. So far its massive. We were listening to it in the car and Johnny (Douglas, her producer) said it sounds like Armageddon coming. Thats how big it was. So far it sounds like every single of the three Ive heard is hip hop, indie and pop mixed into one.
What was it like to support Amy Winehouse?
Remi: Amazing. The first day I thought I was going to cry. I was so nervous. To play acoustically in a venue that size, I thought it was never going to work. Amy came up to me she was like: youll smash it, dont worry, just go for it.
Is it true you met Elton John at the show as well?
Remi: Yeah he said: Hello darlin, how are you. He was so nice. Elton said he was going to call my label and get some of my music sent to him. I didnt think he would, but he did!
What are your hopes and ambitions?
Remi: I want to have a career in something I didnt even know I wanted to do. I want to get better as a guitar player and as a musician in general and to sell maybe two or three albums.
Id like to win an award or two for the cabinet maybe, that would be fun. I dont want to be uber famous so I cant walk down the street. I dont want Elton Johns career for example where Id have to have bodyguards with me. He could just be my mate.
