Swedens best export tells us about single With Every Heartbeat and her long career in pop.
You'll know Robyn by now. First time around with Show Me Love she was a sweet teen pop star but now shes back with attitude and the best pop album since Justin Timberlakes debut- we s*it you not!
Despite her manufactured roots the Swede is no dumb puppet. Pop music is the perfect medium to write about the human condition, she told MTV.co.uk.
At the age of 12 Robyn was discovered through a TV talent show and already had a history in entertainment: My parents are actors so I grew up with a theatre group. I watched them putting up a stage and had a nave, romantic view of showbusiness.
Moulded by Max Martin, the svengali behind massive hits for Britney Spears and N*Sync her dance-pop went global: I was part of this first wave of pop music coming out of Sweden. I was only 16 when I made my first record and with the success of it I was pulled into this different world.
After three albums Robyn got out of major label deals and decided to do everything herself: I knew this album was gonna be lot of hard work, the 28 year old told us. Ive paid for everything myself but its been worth it all the way.
You can say that again. The starlets self titled album was released on her own Konichiwa Records and mixes hip hop and electro influences with superb hooks. Its futuristic, banging and surprising yet it still sounds like something Britney Spears or Gwen Steafani would kill to record.
Robyn worked with her home countrys finest musicians- acclaimed electro group The Knife, Klas hlund from Teddybears STHLM and- on current single With Every Heartbeat- producer Kleerup.
It was just last year that I wrote With Every Heartbeat, says the blonde star. I just did it for Kleerup to go on his album and it turned out so well we put it on the UK version of the album.
He was breaking up with his girlfriend so I wrote a song about that. We wanted it to be heartfelt and dramatic, she explained.
The emotional vocals and gorgeous strings certainly struck a chord on our shores where the track looks set to go to Number 1. The UK has always been known for appreciating dance music and people just started asking for it, Robyn exclusively told MTV.
Now shes come full circle and signed for a major label again. Universal will re-release her album later in 2007 but Robyn has already started working her on new material. says she wont be pushed around.
Theres total creative freedom for us, she says. Im gonna be A&Ring my next album as well. And when we asked if shes tempted to use the company to get famous producers in Robyn revealed:
I made this record in Sweden and it proves I dont need to go anywhere else. Someone like Timbaland is one of the best producers ever but its important to stay independent.
Despite a tumultuous history with the music industry the star is not bitter: I started off working with Max Martin and that shaped me. I still call him sometimes and get feedback on songs I write.
Working in this industry at a very early age affects you but Im pleased I did it and learnt so much, Robyn told MTV I feel like Im just starting but Ive got 10 years experience.
Go buy Robyns amazing self titled album now or at least the single With Every Heartbeat- theyre both out now.
